Westmeath comes from the Irish word an Iar Mhí meaning the west and Mí - the central place. Lough Derravaragh in Co. Westmeath is said to have been one of the lakes in which the children of Lír lived for centuries after being transformed into swans by an evil spell cast by their stepmother Aoife. Mullingar in County Westmeath was also the seat of the High King of Ireland before Saint Patrick came to Ireland. Mullingar was the central point of the 5 old provinces of Ireland.
